The Whitsunday Islands comprise seventy four gems of lush emerald forests and dazzling white beaches in the Coral Sea, between the coast of Queensland, Australia, and the Great Barrier Reef. Guarded by the Barrier Reef, the surrounding waters are as calm as they are crystalline, ideal for sailing and snorkelling, while the four inhabited islands: Daydream, Hamilton, Hayman and Long, boast luxury resorts and family-friendly hotels. The spectacular Whitehaven Beach on Whitsunday Island, often lauded as the finest in the world, is made of ninety-eight percent pure silica sand, giving it a powdery texture and the ability to polish jewellery. Australia’s main ferry hub for the Whitsunday Islands is the resort town of Airlie Beach in Queensland, with several sailings every day, but there are also routes from Shute Harbour, roughly ten kilometres east along the coast.
