Waiheke is one of the Hauraki Gulf Islands, just east of Auckland, an affluent city on the North Island, New Zealand. World-class wines and wonderful beaches make Waiheke an unmissable stop. So much so, it was voted the ‘fifth best destination in the world to visit’ in 2016 by the esteemed travel guide Lonely Planet. Visitors make the short ferry crossing, a mere forty minutes, from Auckland for superb vineyard tours, strolling through National Reserves and soaking up the island’s pleasant micro-climate. It also has some impressive World War II remains, including a network of tunnels and gun emplacements used to defend Auckland Harbour, making Waiheke a well-rounded day trip spot. To reach Waiheke Island, you can choose from one of the many routes operated by reputable ferry companies. The ferries depart from Auckland Harbour and Devonport, a suburb to the north of the city centre.
