Located on the idyllic eastern coast of Andros Island, the largest of the inhabited landmasses that make up the archipelagic nation of the Bahamas, is the island capital of Andros Town. Once a part of the now dissolved Fresh Creek region, this sparsely populated settlement is set along a long silver-sand seafront that overlooks the shallows of the Atlantic Ocean and the vibrant Andros Barrier Reef below. The area is also known as the home to underwater caverns known as Blue Holes that plunge deep into the seabed. The port is found to the north of town on the banks of the Fresh Creek waterway. It consists of nothing more than a ferry check-in terminal, a compact car-park and a few jetties that extend into the turquoise waters of the creek. The closest amenities to the port are found across the bridge that stretches north over the river. They include a bank, a restaurant, and a local shop selling food and drink. Due to the largely remote nature of the island only a few transport routes cover the island. Just two main roads exist in Central Andros, the largest of which is the Queen’s Highway that cuts through Andros Town and stretches along the verdant, palm-lined eastern coast. No public bus or train service exists either, though taxi cabs are available to take passengers to most of the island hotspots. Just one ferry route leaves from Fresh Creek port. A Bahamas Ferries line sails once a week to the Bahaman capital of Nassau, a short north-eastern voyage that skirts along the glistening island shores of New Providence.
